Established in 1926, the Troutman Volunteer Fire Department is a full-spectrum Fire and Rescue agency. Most of the department’s volunteers are qualified first responders; many are EMT & Fire Fighter II certified.

In addition, the Volunteer Fire Department team includes well-trained specialists in Vehicle Extrication, Hazardous Material Response, Water Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Advanced Life Support EMS, Trench Rescue, Vehicle Extrication and High Level Rescue.

The unpaid volunteers on the VFD team — nearly fifty people — protect the lives and property of the people living, working and playing in Troutman. Roughly a quarter of the department’s calls are to locations within Troutman Town limits; the rest are in the more rural areas surrounding tnhe Tow.

The department’s range of services extends beyond emergencies. The Rescue Squad is part of the First Responder Program, serving as stand-by staff for large public events like fairs, sporting events, rodeos, balloon rallies and the like, administering first aid at the scene in an emergency until the EMS or EMT arrives.

The Rescue Squad provides crowd and traffic control at public events to maintain a safe environment and flow of activities, acts immediately in any emergency situation that arises, retrieves equipment for rescue personnel as needed, and cleans up an area after an emergency has been handled.

With its two 4WD ambulances, the Troutman Rescue Squad is able to transport paramedics to help handle medical emergencies in inclement weather, and over the roughest terrain.

Funded largely by allocations from an Iredell County fire tax, the Department’s budget is also partly funded through an annual service contract with our Town of Troutman for fire and rescue services.

The Department operates two fire stations. The large Main Street Station in Town is the headquarters facility, where the bulk of the specialty rescue equipment is maintained. The Pineville Station is strategically located (FOUR MILES) ‘out in the County’ to provide rapid response in the rural end of their territory.

All calls are routed through the Iredell County Emergency Medical Services facility (ICEMS), which may be reached any time by dialing 911. Depending on the type of call, the nearest and most appropriate first responders will be dispatched, whether that be fire, ambulance, rescue, police or combination.

ICEMS operates one County base station in Troutman, with an ambulance and paramedics on duty 24 hours a day. There are seven such fully-equipped ambulances distributed at base stations throughout the County to best match population distribution.
